Photo...while walking in Harako.

I took this photo while walking in Harako.
It is one of my morning walk courses.
Most of my Tanka works are given there.
My books 'TANKA HARAKO' series are titled from this site.

My favorite tanka ...Void Flower / 空木

<Tanka / 短歌>

my funeral --

hope to be

buried in

flower clusters of void

...fading into thin air...

※In this tanka, 'void' is 'deuztia', which is called 'Utsugi 空木' in Japanese. When 'Utsugi' is translated literally into English, it is 'Void Tree' or 'Empty Tree'. So I used 'void' as 'deutzia'.

This takna was featured in CQ Magazine August 2016.

Tanka/ 短歌...The Well of a Mirror / 姿見の井戸

<Tanka / 短歌>

I see myself
in the well of a mirror--
given
gratefully three years life
to live in truth

There is <the Well of a Mirror> in the precincts of Akagami Gosha
shrines, Oga Peninsula, Akita prefecture, Japan.

" It is said that if you cannot see yourself in this mirror, you will die
        within three years".

Fortunatelly I could see myself in it.   Then I thought I was given
at least three years life and I felt to be told live in truth.
I transposed this feeling into Tanka poetry.

<Tanka / 短歌>

to ask

the name of flowers--

"miyakowasure"

...years have passed

since I left Tokyo

Miyakowasure is a kind of asters' name in Japanese.
If I translate it literally into English,
it is to forget the capital city.
For me , it is Tokyo.
It is called Miyamayomena savateri, Gymnaster savatieri in English.

There is one story about the flower.
Miyakowasure was named by Juntoku Tenno (Japanese Emperor),
who was banished to a distant island Sado from Kyoko
because of the defeat in Jokyu War (AD 1221).
Those days' capital city was Kyoto.
It is said that he consoled himself with the flowers in Sado Island,
so he named it Miyakowasure ( to forget Miyako/ Kyoto).
Tenno family's crest( emblem) is Chrysanthemum and
the aster is one of kind of it.
Seeing Miyakowasure and composing Waka (Tanka) ,
Juntoku Tenno missed Kyoto and his prosperity...
yet, there was still his family's crest Chrysanthemum there,
which was Miyakowasure...
